Understand how futures emerge.

Scenario methodology

Axis construction, consistency and an exploratory self-understanding — the methodological foundation of the scenario cross.

Pictures of Tomorrow automates an established method; it does not replace it. The foundation is the scenario cross of the intuitive-logics school: from the many driving factors, the two are chosen that are both most impactful and most uncertain — the key uncertainties. They form the two axes whose four quadrants yield the four scenarios.

Each scenario is an internally consistent bundle of factor states, narrative and core statement; the four together form a system: plausible, yet clearly distinct. What matters is the self-understanding — the scenarios are exploratory, not predictive. The method is described in depth in: Pillkahn (2008), Using Trends and Scenarios as Tools for Strategy Development.
